The 50th state in the United States is made up of a string of islands collectively known as Hawaii, but the largest of the islands in the string is also known as Hawaii which often causes some confusion. To make it clear which island is being referred to, a lot of people simply call Hawaii island the big island. The Hawaii islands are in reality the result of underground lava formation starting in the base of the ocean and building upwards until the magma extended above the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

There are eight inhabited islands in the string of the islands of Hawaii with many others tipping their sides out of the water, but they are not inhabited. Nihau, the north west-most island is the smallest of the populated island and the big island is situated to the furthest southeast link in the string of the islands of Hawaii. Oahu is home to the state capital Honolulu as well as you can find there Hawaii vacation specials for vacationers, taken by former ruler King Kamehamea due to the proximity of the natural harbor, nowadays well-known as Honolulu Harbor.

Other lands in the Hawaii islands include Kauai, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoulawe and last not least traveling to Maui. Transportation between these islands is provided by air or boat with the bigger islands having airports taking large commercial aircraft and others smaller, commuter aircraft.

With the Hawaii islands beginnings traced back to barren lava growing, it is speculated that the nature helped bring life to volcanic land by wind streams, by flying birds and in the water. When the first human came for Polynesia in about 500 A.D., animals and plants had already claimed the island and recent conservation methods have assured the continued growing and stable habitat for the native species.

The islands of Hawaii got an important strategy for the Air Force and U.S. Navy, even before Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. While still home to U.S. military bases, which provide a large population with opportunities for civilian jobs, it also features the memorials for the soldiers who deceased during the attack.

The population of Hawaii islands has grown hugely, particularly since getting a state in 1959, as the nosecount in 1910 registered a human population of about 154,000. Inhabitants have grown to over 1.2 million in 2000. Hawaii vacation travel is a great journey to the only U.S. state entirely surrounded by the ocean and is located around 1,500 miles away from mainland at the Pacific coast of California.
