Don’t Be Contained, Enjoy Sport Outside

Posted: July 12th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Outdoor Activity | Tags: , , , , , | No Comments »

It’s a sad fact but people are enjoying the outside less and less these days. TV and computers have taken over a lot of people lives and this is having dramatic medical implications all across the country. Sport is one of the best ways to get outside, get moving and enjoy everything the world has to offer. Here is a look at 3 great sports that almost anyone can enjoy?

Biking
. They say you never forget how to ride a bike…so what is stopping you getting on one now. You can pick up good second hand bikes nowadays for next to nothing and you can look up good cycle routes on the internet very easily. Further more, cycling is great for anyone who has been out of exercise for a long time or has lost all their confidence as you can ride as vigorously or as gentle as you want to

Kayaking
. If solid ground is a little too mundane for you then one brilliant water-based sport you might like to try is kayaking. Like mountain bikes there are plenty of water-tight kayaks around and all you need other than that is an oar and a life jacket. Make sure you get some training first so that you know what to do in the event of an accident, but after that you can go exploring to your heart content.

Surfing. If you’ve managed to stay dry in the kayak and fancy getting your hair wet then why not find some friends, grab a bunch of surfboards and hit the beach. If you begin by just trying to surf on your tummy you’ll pick it up quite quickly, after which time you can progress onto standing. Remember to take your car keys out of your pocket first however, as it could be a long walk home otherwise

Surf Shop Locations

Surfers and journeys go hand in hand; unfortunately this is a major reason why surfers never have money! Surf travel is EXPENSIVE! Wave riders need some assistance in this area; not to mention the community surf shops. Peaks and Barrels are planning to present just that. There is finally a website dedicated to surf voyagers. Navigation is easy and makes sense, they also are very easy to contact as well. To stay updated on Surf journey News they have made available a free member domain to stay connected.I hate spam, One cool thing about peaks and barrels is that they have many ways to stay updated so if email updates are not your thing it is not a problem. They are connected to all of the social sites like facebook and twitter. They have great coupons they tweet out for the neighborhood shops. What makes this service rare is that surf shops can use Peaks and Barrels to release their coupons and surfing deals. Here is a cool feature instead of worrying about keeping up with all of your favorites surf shops, get plugged into peaks and barrels and then you stay up to date on all of the local shops in the whole world! After you grab your coupon from the PNB website or Twitter, visit their Surf Travel Map which is very easy to use and makes touring a much simpler experience. You will find their map has all of the well know breaks as well as the neighborhood surf shops connected to those breaks. Their map is very exclusive and inclusive it is exactly what a surfer needs to plan a surf jaunt. Using peaks and barrels is fun and easy, I can line up a surfboard that I want to surf during my voyage at a local surf shop, and I can avoid a 0 board bag airline charge.By the way, when using Peaks and Barrels to organize your tour just mention peaks and barrels and the partner shops will totally take care of you!!!Peaks and Barrels has really jumped into the 21st century of surfing by finding a niche, identifying a problem and offering an innovative solution. They are essentially an extension of the community surf shop on the global level.
The goal is to show surfers where their community surf shops are around the world. They have a surf team that is headed up by World #6 Amee Donohoe. She can be quoted as saying “I really feel like I am at home with Peaks and Barrels.”She told me that she had never heard of them before they had approached her. We asked her if Peaks and Barrels had any other plans besides the interactive surf travel maps? She Smiled and replied “You will have to wait and see, but I can tell you this…It is exactly what the surfing world needs! “When you are on their site you can pick up a tee shirt. We could not get a straight answer on who designs their tees. To be honest we really love this site. They do a nice job on shirt design so if you want you can pick one up on the site too! Peaks and Barrels is really attempting to make their mark on the surfing world and they are doing a fine job at it. Peaks and Barrels are working on tools that are going to make surf travel easy and fun. Peaks and Barrels target is Surfers. If you surf, and you tour; then you want to be Surfing Peaks and Barrels: Where Surfers GO! Planning a surf trip requires a tactical plan that may or may not lead to scoring perfect waves. The deal with neighborhood surf shops that is killing them is online sales and the mega surf shops with the mega marketing budgets. Peaks and Barrels understand one concept so important to surf culture and that is the ability to get a locally shaped board that is designed for the wave you are journeying to surf. It has become all to common that you will pay to much and receive very little. The local surf shop needs to be on the map for surfers this is how they plan to help out the industry. They are trying to help provide a solution, they are working to make surf shops a global destination once again. Peaks and Barrels Where Surfers Go.

Finally Surfing and Snowboarding Have Come Together

Posted: November 26th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Sports | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

People who perform extreme sports are not your normal sports participants. They are masters of innovation and if something can be done differently, chances are someone will attempt it. Both surfing and snowboarding, although popular, are a little old now in some people’s eyes and could do with updating. It is no surprise then that one avid extreme sports fan gave in to curiosity and tried riding down the mountain side on his customised surfboard…and succeeded?

The sport of snow surfing is thought to have first been conceived in New Zealand when a visiting Australian surfer decided to see if he could ride his board on the white stuff.Ever since that fateful day, thousands have followed in his snow footsteps and now take part in the sport. Coordination and confidence are the two vital ingredients to succeeding in the sport say participants. Unlike snowboards, riders do not have any bindings to attach themselves to the board, but instead rely on aggressive carving and the use of the hands to ensure that the board stays under their feet.  Stopping has also proved something of a challenge due to the lack of sharp ‘edges’ on a surfboard, but most runs incorporate a run-off area where riders can slow down.

As with all emerging extreme sports, sponsors and industry brands have been paying close attention to see if it is worth their while getting involved. There is speculation that both Ride and Volcom are getting involved in the sport and have been sending their scouts out to snow surfing events recently. The sport is still very new however and it is unlikely that anyone is really thinking about big corporate deals and media packages just yet. That said, given the early growth of the sport, you might soon be seeing some snow surfers at a resort new you.

How The Sports of Surfing and Snowboarding Compare

Posted: November 13th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Sports | Tags: , , , , , | 1 Comment »

Both surfing and snowboarding have continued to grow in participation levels over the last 10 years, to the point were they can be considered two of the most popular extreme sports around. It might be the case that one takes place on snow covered mountains and the other often takes place in warm waters with sandy beaches, but that doesn’t stop people enjoying both sports. But does being good at one sport necessarily mean that you will be good at the other? Let’s compare 3 of the main elements needed for these sports.

Upper Body Strength. There is no denying that surfing demands large amounts of upper body strength and endurance. You need endurance in order to repetitively paddle surfboards out to see against breaking waves, and power is need in the ‘pop-up’ phase of getting upright on the board when you have caught a wave. Snowboarding however, does not demand anywhere near as from the upper body, as it is only really used for balance and core-stability support

Timing. Both snowboarding and surfing require honed timing skills. In snowboarding it is vital to time your turns perfectly and even more important when doing jumps as lining up for the correct entry to the kicker can mean the difference between a clean landing and a face full of snow. Surfing also requires perfect timing and instincts not least when catching a wave when you have to paddle, pop-up, drop in and turn just at the right times.

Lower Body Strength & Agility. Whilst both sports do require a degree lower body fitness and co-ordination, it is snowboarding that demands the most from the legs. Snowboards require great skill and agility to turn and carve, and if your leg muscles are not in good condition you will simply not be able to ride well. However, don’t think the lower body can be neglected in surfing, your legs and core need to be strong and flexible, even just to stand up.

Ultimate Surfing Holiday Sites In America

Posted: September 22nd, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Sports | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

Firstly, if your in America on a surfing holiday your first stop should really be Cocoa Beach in Florida. The swells can serve up some pretty sweet surf but you have to be there at the right time. Head here in the summer months and you stand a chance of getting some waves but there is also quite a high risk you’ll spend a lot of time sitting on the beach wondering where they have all gone. Pay a visit in winter however and it will be whole different ball game. The winter surf is a great deal more reliable and often kicks up swells of close to 10ft. This place is a lot of fun and is a friendly and safe place to hang out, making it perfect for amateurs or those looking for a good party. For the top conditions, pay a visit between November and March

Secondly, it would be criminal not to visit the iconic place where surfing was born. Hawaii is well known for being a surf haven, and for good reason. There are waves here that are as tall as sky scrapers and as regular as day and night. It’s so steeped in surfing history that you could easily spend your whole time on your Hawaii holidays, cycling around on the traditional second hand bikes, visiting historic sites, talking to locals about the good old days when surfboards were made out of wood, or checking out the thousands of surfboards on sale. Well, maybe not the whole of your time, you must save a little for the 20ft monsters at Oahu and the sheer beauty of the beaches and surf and Waimea and Ehukai. Heaven on Earth

Last but not certainly not least, no American surf holiday would be complete without experiencing the “surf city” of the USA, Huntington, which funnily enough is also known for the snowboards they produce. This places attracts top surfers like bees to honey, probably because the sun never seems to set. Some of the biggest names in surfing spend a lot of their year here and its no surprise there are surf comps going on all the time.It can become pretty manic here though, eleven millions people came to visit last year. So if you’re after more of quiet surfing holiday come and enjoy the water in the winter months.

Adventure Travel And Extreme Sports

Posted: September 19th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Other Travel, Sports | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

Action sports are ever so popular, but how did they start?

Action Sports are getting hugely popular these days. With some of these sports, you could just practise them in front of your doorstep all year round, regardless of rain or temperature and the need to travel to find new playgrounds   is not required.
In some others adventure sports, travelling is the best option if you want to improve and this is where surfing holidays makes sense.

Before the 90’s, a surfer would make his own surfing holiday, he would take a plane alongside with his boards to a remote destination, rent a car and tour the country , looking for descent breaks and the right moments to surf them. Surfing holidays at these times were still called “surf trips “.

Since then, a lot of companies emerged from this rising market of surfing holidays. For the most hardcore surfers, this represents everything a surf traveller hates: patterns and routine. But planning a surf holiday is not to everyone’s ability. Travelling to a new spot is never easy, the expectations usually never match the reality.

This is why sports holiday companies are now offering surfing holidays for all levels.
The more hassles that arise, sift the faint hearted from the professionals. The choice of the destination is yours but the surf holiday has been scouted and tested by their team. In most of the time, they guarantee you a fun, safe and comfortable surfing holiday.

You could undergo such a surfing holiday as a beginner going to a gentle warm beach break with your family playing by the hotel’s pool while you are getting started on the waves, experience a surfing holiday clinics for intermediate riders, starting to feel the power of the reefs and practise those manoeuvres you always dreamt of achieving.

Last but not least there are surfing holidays organised around a boat trip, taking you to the best breaks in the surroundings, living onboard and often ride totally uncrowned dream waves, this has become hugely popular in Indonesia.
Of course this is aimed at experienced riders who do not fear a few cuts from razor sharp coral reefs!

Surfing holidays are very different from surfing, you need them to be set up so you get the best benefits from your short stay. The reef is semi private, only the customers of the resort can surf it, this is allowed in the Fiji’s and the Maldives for example where government permits a lease on specific islands and on its surrounding reefs!

How well could a surf holiday work out for you? Leaving all the organisations, weather doubts and logistics is always better in the hands of professional companies.

Remember that often, diving holidays, surfing holidays and activity holidaysactivity holidays will take you to remote places in third world countries where accuracy and reliability are not exactly translated in the local linguo!

Action Travel is one of teh fastest growing sectors of travel and continues to bring smiles to teh hundreds that try. The ultimate aim is to catch as many waves as possibel and have as much fun! Aloha to all !

Is the Term Extreme Sports Used Too Easily These Days?

Posted: September 19th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Sports | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

It was once the case that the term extreme sports related only to a select few activities. Among those worthy of the accolade included sports such as surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, motocross, base jumping and a few others. There was an obvious disparity however between the extreme level of even these ‘original sports’. No one could argue that riding a BMX around a bit was as extreme as throwing yourself off a huge building with only a thin bit of fabric to slow you down before you hit the ground.

Nowadays however the range of sports that fall under the ‘Extreme Sports’ umbrella is quite frankly staggering. There are thrills to be had everywhere, including in the sky with paragliding, to in the water with the currently very popular, paddle boarding. In some cases it is no longer impressive enough to turn up to the beach with your surfboards, you now need to be involved in kitesurfing, land yachting, skim boarding and loads of other sports that people have dreamt up whilst presumably under the influence.

Some people think this is a bad thing and that the term ‘Extreme Sports’ should only be reserved for those sports either around from the beginning or that contain an element of danger so great that only those will a bit of screw loose are willing to give them a go. Extreme sport can not be limited to a few people’s opinion though, it is a way of life and therefore can be embraced by anyone and everyone. It’s about getting out there and trying something new. Maybe getting some new scars to show off, or scaring the living daylights out of your mother sometimes, but feeling alive every minute. It’s about picking up some second hand kayaks on a whim and taking them out on the river for a quick blast, and feeling alive when you make it to the still-water in once piece. So the term ‘extreme sports’ has boundaries that are meant to be pushed and that change over time, which is not a bad thing, it’s just evolution.
