What are some tips for desert camping at the Grand Canyon?

Posted: September 4th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Camping Tips | Tags: , , , , , , , , | 3 Comments »

Ok, a friend and I are planning a trip to the Grand Canyon for early June. We are staying in a tent for a week or maybe a little more, probably at Mather Campground. What are some good camping tips for that area? What is the wildlife situation? We are on a tight budget so does anyone know fun, cheap things to do within hiking distance? (We wont have a car as we are arriving by train.) We can only take so much on the train so is food cheap at the local store? ANY info, especially from people who previously stayed at Mather would be greatly appreciated!!

Going camping for the first time, need tips…?

My boyfriend and I are going camping this weekend with some friends for 2 nights. Neither of us have ever been camping before so I was hoping we could get some camping tips!

We know to pack light, that it’s all about keeping it simple.
We know that there will be access to bathrooms, showers, and grills.
We know the temperature will probably be in the 70s during the day and the 50s at night.
We know to bring our tent, air mattress, and sleeping bags.

…That’s about all we know haha.

What is best to wear (clothes, shoes, etc.)? We will be doing some light hiking along a stream and our feet will probably get wet.

What kind of food should we bring? How do we store it? (If we bring hotdogs and burger in a cooler with ice, will the ice last 2 whole days?) How do we prepare it?

Is there anything we really MUST bring?

Is there anything we really SHOULD NOT bring? (aka anything that will attract animals that will eat us…?)

THANKS A LOT!!
"TheCuriousCooker", you must be confused. This is the section where you answer questions, not ask them. But, I’ll humor you. We’re in college. Camping is not big where we’re from, but it’s something we’ve always wanted to do.

Please share any camping tips. Also, anyone have any ideas for heating up a tent, when you can’t get ahold of a portable tent heater. Maybe a single burner propane stove? Any camping tips and/or ideas? Thanks.

Everyone Should Plan For A Family Camping Trip

Posted: October 4th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Camping Tips | Tags: , , , , , , | 10 Comments »

A family camping trip is a fun way of sharing a great experience and enjoying nature and a bit of adventure.

To ensure the success of the camping trip and to eliminate most potential problems, planning before the event is vital. Include all family members in the planning and generation of ideas; this way they will ‘own’ the trip, participate better, have more fun and gain lots of valuable skills. It is important to learn to work as part of a team, and planning a camping trip is an ideal place to learn.

You need to decide the where and when before anything else can be done. Get everyone in the family to come up with some suggestions of a destination, giving some guidelines to keep ideas appropriate. Call a family meeting and let everyone express their ideas and wishes. Some suggestions may need discussion, with positives and negatives pointed out and talked about.

When you know your destination and the time of year, planning can begin on what needs to be packed. Divide up the areas that need to be planned and give everyone something to do. Smaller children can still be given a task, just make sure it is age-appropriate. Allow enough time for everyone to complete their lists and call another family meeting.

At this meeting, everyone will go through their list and others can make suggestions. This will evoke lots of discussion and much hilarity, but that is all part of the fun. This process may take more than one session. Make sure that no one’s feeling are hurt and help children understand that there are always more than one way to look at things.

When all areas are covered and lists are finished, it is time to allocate jobs. Make sure jobs are appropriate to age and ability, and encourage everyone to work together. Include jobs like checking the camping gear, setting up the tent to air, finding all the sleeping bags etc. Even small kids can organize their own clothes, and this gives them a real sense of responsibility.

Discussions will be an on-going thing as preparations continue, and be prepared to make changes if a better idea comes up. Be prepared for everything going wrong, and you will be prepared for anything. Remember to allow for keeping clean clothes and shoes dry, have a good first aid kit (and check it before you leave) and have some food that doesn’t need to be cooked in case you can’t get a fire lit.

By involving the whole family in the planning and preparation of the camping trip, everyone will learn new skills and feel like they have been partly responsible for a great family time.

Where To Go Camping

Posted: August 20th, 2009 | Author: | Filed under: Camping Tips | Tags: , , , | 303 Comments »

Are you interested in going camping in the near future?  Camping is a fun and exciting recreational activity. What is nice about camping is that you have a number of different options, in terms of locations.  A few of the many locations that you may want to examine for your next camping adventure are outlined below for your convenience.

State parks are one of the best locations to go camping.  They are often run and monitored by state governments, in terms of security and maintence.  Although you have to pay to enter a state park, even if you do not plan on camping, the admission price is more than worth it.  Often times, with state parks, you will find that camping is just one of the many things that you can do while visiting one.  Many state parks have a number of hiking trails, as well as lakes, ponds, or streams, where you can usually swim or wade.  Many state parks also have gift shops. This means that you may be able to buy a souvenir of your camping adventure.

In addition to state parks, you can also go camping at parks that are commonly referred to as campground parks. In the United States, these types of parks are often the ones that are first associated with camping. Campground parks are areas that are designed especially for campers.  They often have a large number of campground sites. Campground parks are often filled with activities; activities that usually include hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, and much more.  Many campground parks also have game rooms, first aid offices, security posts, as well as onsite laundry rooms.

When many individuals think of camping, the woods are often the first thing that comes to mind. While many campground parks and state parks are located in wooded areas, you can also go camping along the beach. When thinking of the beach and camping, it is important to focus on more than the coastline.  Many individuals and companies have made beachfront areas out of ponds, lakes, rivers, and small streams.  The majority of the time, these beachfront camping sites are privately owned and operated, but you should be able to make a reservation and pay a fee to camp there.

Another one of the many locations that you can camp at is your own backyard.  Unfortunately, many people do not associate camping with their backyards.  If you are an experienced camper, you may prefer camping in a state park, along the beach, or in a public campground.  At the same time, it is always nice to have the option to camp in your backyard whenever you want.  It is also important to mention that backyard camping is ideal if you are camping for the first time or if you are camping with small children, namely children who are unfamiliar with camping and all that comes along with it.

The above mentioned locations are just a few of the many locations that you may want to keep in mind, when planning your next camping adventure. To decide where you should camp, you may want to examine the distance from your intended destination to your home, the cost of making a reservation, and onsite or nearby activities.  Keeping these factors in mind will help to ensure that you choose the best location for your next camping adventure, no matter how long or short you plan on it being.
