You may have carefully chosen the perfect recurve or compound bow most suitable for your needs but have you thought about the type of arrows you will use with it? Picking the correct arrow type is crucial if you are to be successful and must be a good match for your bow and be fitting for the type of archery you will be doing. Will you be using your bow chiefly for hunting or for target practise? What options are there for arrows and which type is suitable for your needs?

Wood Arrows

Wood has always been the material used for arrows but now wood arrows are used only for beginners and for longbow competitions. They are not generally used in other circumstances as they do not give uniform results due to variation in the shape and weight of the arrows. Wooden arrows can break easily and warp over time however they are cheap and are good for beginners to practise with.

Fiberglass Arrows

Fiberglass arrows are consistent as they are uniformly made, however, they are brittle and easily broken. They are easy to fit to different draw lengths and are suitable for hunting.

Aluminium Arrows

Arrows made from aluminium are much tougher than those made from wood or fibreglass. They are made in a consistent manner so are reliable. They can be bought in a wide range of sizes and types so you will be able to find one correct for your needs. The reliability of aluminium arrows makes them ideal for hunting and competition use and they are made with interchangeable arrowheads. However they are more costly than wood or fiberglass arrows so may be unsuitable for novices who tend to lose a lot of arrows. Choose a cheaper arrow until you are more proficient!

Carbon Arrows

These types of arrows are used by more serious archers as they are efficient and durable and can achieve a high speed. They are manufactured with an aluminium core surrounded by a carbon composite shell and are extremely resilient so do not break easily as fiberglass arrows can do. They are undoubtedly the best arrows that are available but they are expensive so are commonly used only by serious archers.

Other Things to Consider

Fletches today are generally made from plastic or synthetic material although traditional feather fletches are available. Stability is given to the arrow by the fletches as it flies and helps to improve the speed. Have a go with different types to see how the different types feel in use. The point is also important. If you are hunting you will need a specially made point. Finally, buy a good quiver to protect your arrows and carry spare draw strings with you.
