RV-ing: A Family Affair

My husband and I decided to be RV-ers three years ago and we haven’t regretted it yet! We
could not really do the “RV Thing” without the support and blessing of our family. Once we
convinced them that we really wanted to pursue this type of adventure, they reluctantly
agreed to let us. Now, three years into it, they’re as “gung ho” as we are!

Together, we have five grown children, their mates/dates/spouses, and nine grandchildren
(with Number Ten on the way). They were all used to us being nearby for most of the year.
Although we did spend several months in the winter and summer away from them, they visited us
at these destinations and were comfortable with being familiar with where we were. Our
winter/summer arrangement was a temporary situation because our seasons were limited and our
okids always knew when to expect us to return.

Traveling to unfamiliar destinations in an unspecified time frame seemed threatening to them.
Needless to say, they were a bit apprehensive when we shared our desire to travel our
country by RV. Questions persisted: “Are you sure you want to do this?” “Do you really
think you can afford this?” “What if we can’t get in touch with you?”

Our daughter even took us to see the Robin Williams movie, “RV”, to try to convince us that
she didn’t think we were cut out to be RV-ers. We were all rolling in the aisles laughing at
the antics and hilarity of that RV adventure. And, I would say, my husband and I learned a
few things NOT to do by watching it, too!

All of our plans for purchasing our RV worked out and everything easily fell into place. We
convinced our kids “it was meant to be”. Reluctantly, at first, they relented and “wished us
well”.

To keep them satisfied and amused, I stay in touch with them via email and travelogue. They
look forward to reading about our daily adventures while we travel. Our school-aged
grandchildren follow our destinations with Atlas road maps and excitedly share our adventures
during “Show and Tell”.

Today, after 45 states, numerous National Parks, several State Parks, countless wildlife
sightings, entertaining stories, and the adventures of a lifetime, our family encourages- us
to travel. They are delighted we can do so in the comforts of our RV!
