After you feel totally comfortable in a small sailboat you can take those skills and move onto a larger vessel. It is easiest to learn about sailing if you start with a sailboat with only one sail.

There are a large selection of small sailboats with one sail. Beginners also tend to do best with a single hulled boat. Most new sailors prefer fiberglass boats because they are lightweight and do not need a lot of maintenance.
