If you are selecting your first kayak you should first think about the different types available.  Would an inflatable, rigid or folding kayak be the best choice? You’ll have lots of questions and will need information to help you make a good decision. There are a confusing number of different types to choose from so we’ll consider the range of kayaks in the shops.

Types of Kayaks Available

* Rigid – made of plastic, wood, Kevlar, fiberglass, carbon fiber
* Inflatable kayaks
* Folding kayaks

Rigid Kayak’s Construction Materials

These are the types of kayaks that most people are familiar with. The cheapest option here is to buy a plastic model which, however, is the heaviest. Kayaks made from plastic are fairly strong and durable but are virtually impossible to repair if they are heavily damaged. A little more costly is a fiberglass material which will be lighter and easier to repair but also can be damaged more easily. Other construction materials include Kevlar, carbon fiber or graphite composites which are much lighter but more expensive. Though not as popular, wooden boats can be bought, especially in the form of a kit for self-assembly. Though wooden boats are very easy to repair they require much more looking after than all the other types of kayaks.

Some Features of Inflatable Kayaks

Inflatable kayaks are very good for transporting and storage. They are among the least expensive types to buy, easy-to-use and their performance is as good as a rigid kayak. Inflatable kayaks are also extremely buoyant and stable so don’t capsize easily, which makes them suitable for the beginner. They are suitable for whitewater, calm water and surf kayaking so they are exceptionally versatile. You may have some concerns about their toughness but if you don’t buy the cheapest but purchase a good quality inflatable kayak it will be as strong as a rigid boat. For most people, unless you are going in for serious competitions, an inflatable kayak will more than likely be the best choice.

Some Features of Folding Kayaks

Folding kayaks tend to be much more expensive than rigid kayaks but they are however very long-lasting, durable, stable and flexible. They as a rule have a frame made of aluminium or wood covered in fabric. Even though they cost more they frequently have a higher secondhand value and have a longer useful life than many of the other types of kayaks. On the other hand they do suffer a bit from lack of speed and performance is usually lower than a rigid kayak.

Most folding kayaks use a different material for the deck and the hull. Decks are generally made from cotton or a cotton blend or a synthetic material. Material generally used for hulls is a plastic such as PVC, polyurethane or Hypalon which covers a synthetic cloth such as Dacron. Folding kayaks generally have air chambers in the hull to to help prevent capsizing.

Conclusion

When you have decided between a folding, inflatable or rigid kayak you should think about where you will be using it. Again there are lots of alternatives including ocean, whitewater, recreational,fishing and more. The type you buy will depend on what you will be using it for.
