The Intova Tovatec Itac Scuba Tactical Torch flashlight was initially invented for use in the military as a weapon-mounted tool. It is attached to rifles using a Picatinny Rail. This is a sort of bracket that is used to attach accessories to a gun.

The Itac model of tactical torch features a low beam for ease of scanning documents, an strobe light that can be activated to summon assistance in an emergency and a noiseless tail switch for ease of switching on and off using the thumb. The torch is waterproof to a depth of 400 feet. It operates on batteries and has a ‘burn time’ of ten hours. There is a lanyard that can be used to attach the light to the wrist, which leaves both hands free.

A tactical torch is, by definition, used with a firearm. It functions to light up a prospective target, or to merely startle and disorient it as a form of minimal force. However, rifles are not compulsory and these devices are often used by hikers, campers, scuba divers and hunters.

The introduction of weapon-mounted lights was relatively recent, in 1956. This type of flashlight is costly compared to hand held models. This is because of the extra toughness that needs to be built in to be able to tolerate recoil from firing. The addition of mounting hardware also jacks up the price. Because the light is always parallel to the bore, this set-up may not be suitable under certain rules of engagement.

There are several accessories that can be attached to the Intova Itac torch. One of them is an adapter that makes the light usable for underwater video filming when attached to a Flex Arm. There is also a velcro strap that means you can strap the light securely to the wrist, keeping hands free for exploring outer space, as in Star Trek Voyager. The light uses two CR123A batteries that are also available as accessories.

For use on a firearm with a harsh recoil, it is worth spending the extra money on a sturdy mounted flashlight. If it is for use scuba diving, it is also highly worth the extra expense. You would not want your life to depend on anything less.

If you all you are looking for is just a flashlight to throw in the back of the truck on the odd chance that you might need it when you are driving around or on a camping trip, then a top of the range tactical torch may be more than you need.
