Your choice of fishing rod reel combos, and line will depend on the fishing technique that you choose. Anglers who regularly use several different techniques during a day of fishing often carry three or four fishing rod combos each set up with different lures or live bait rigs.
My fishing preferences are spinning rod reel combos and much of my fishing experience comes while using these outfits and my recommendations for rod selection included here will be based on my fishing experiences.

If your fishing preference is casting small lures and jigs that weigh from 1/16 to 3/8 ounce a good choice in rods would be 5 to 5 ½ foot light power fast action spinning rods. This rod is good choice to propel your light lures and jigs because the rod has very good flex on your back cast giving you longer casting distances. This rod flexes easily on the back cast, so it works well in propelling light lures and baits.
Casting and trolling with large deep diving crank baits and live bait rigs weighing more than 1/2oz is easiest accomplished with fishing rod combos that include a 5 ½ to 6 ft medium power, fast action bait casting rod. Because this rod has more backbone than most spinning rods, it is better suited for heavier lures and rigs.
If you fish mainly with live bait a 6 to 7 foot light power, medium action spinning rod is a better fit when you go looking for your fishing rod reel combos. These rods are a better choice than a shorter stiffer rod.
It’s particularly important to choose quality fishing rod combos that are designed to be used to target sensitive biting species such as perch and walleye. Notice that most of the recommended rods have a fast action. Slower action rods are not as sensitive. Most serious fisherman prefer graphite or boron rods because they transmit vibrations better then fiberglass rods.
Other important features that improve a rods ability to transmit vibrations include a blank that extends all the way through the rod handle with one piece construction, and light weight single foot line guides. Double foot guides add weight and tend to restrict the rods action.
