Coarse fishing is a popular variant of angling that’s found throughout the UK. As many kinds of fish are known as coarse, those who fish should be familiar with their habits and match their fishing tackle as such. Let’s see how you can accurately choose your coarse fishing tackle categorized by species.
Coarse Fishing 101
In an earlier era of our nation’s past, only the gentry would try to catch fish for sporting purposes. Trout and salmon were the exclusive types of fish of interest as well. The gentry felt all other fish were substandard. Thus, such fish were termed “coarse”. Two well-admired coarse fishing species are bream and chub.
Bream
Bream are fish who stick to slow-moving rivers, canals, and lakes. Bream are shoal fish, so where there’s one, there are bound to be others. In order to have a good fishing trip, pick a fishing rod in the range of 9 to 13 feet. Connect a fixed spool fishing reel to the fishing line along with a 3-6 lb. test line. The size of the hook will be the result of the bait you pick. Hooks numbered 10 through 16 need to be reserved for maggots and worms, while number 6 to 10 hooks are terrific for bread and big lobs (earthworms). More bait includes sweetcorn and brandlings. Brandlings are a derivative of the earthworm found in decomposing, natural material such as manure. Bream have a roughly 20-year lifespan and weigh around 7 lbs. – though the country’s record is 16 lbs., 9 oz.
Chub
Chub look similar to dace, but the chub’s anal fin is convex. This kind of fish can be spotted in running water and frequently stays near overhanging trees. Chub also like lakes and ponds. Implement fixed spool fishing reels accompanied with fishing rods nine to eleven feet long. Line strength should be 3 to 5 pounds. Suggested hooks are numbered six to sixteen. Good bait comprises of the following items: maggots, strong cheese, luncheon meat, bread, casters and plugs. Casters refer to the chrysalis step of the maggot and plugs are artificial lure that resemble a fish and tremble as they are dragged through the lake. Chub have a lifespan of 10-12 years and the British record is 8 pounds, 10 ounces. Five pounds is the average.
