Travelling and being a volunteer abroad is a chance many people jump at. Given the opportunity to be able to travel abroad and experience a completely different culture and way of life is something that a lot of people take with them for the rest of their lives. If you are one of those people who really wants to get involved with the local people then living with a host family instead of living with other tourists is the way to go then volunteering is certainly for you.

Firstly it is very important to know which country you wish to travel to, to participate in a volunteer project. Do you want to be a volunteer in Tanzania or a volunteer in South Africa. Once you have made your mind up which country you want to volunteer in then you are able to decide which volunteer project interests you the most.

You must decide a realistic timescale that you want to spend volunteering abroad. A lot of companies have projects which start from 2 weeks and can last anywhere up to 2 years. It is important that you put serious thought and consideration into how long you want to spend abroad and what kind of budget do you have available to you.

It’s important to find out as much as you can about volunteer companies before you decide to book a project. Take time out and request information from them such as brochures. It is also essential that you read through the companies Terms and Conditions so you know where you stand at all times with them.

Write a list of questions to ask volunteer organisations. You need to include questions like how much are the projects? What do i get for my money? How long do the projects last for? What am i likely to expect. At least then you can be clearer in your head about what you are likely to get out of the project.

These are all important decisions one must make before embarking on such an adventure. Ask these sorts of questions and you will be absolutely fine.
