When you make a decision that you want to volunteer overseas you can certainly expect to be confronted with a new culture all together. Some of us are very lucky in situations like this as we have extrovert personalities and can socialise with anyone. A lot of people are introverts and do not cope particularly well surrounded by new people in a new environment. Most of this process is psychological and it’s not as hard as you think to mingle with other cultures. If you are doing some volunteering then you will meet lots of new people and below are just a few pointers on what to do and what not to do.
It Take’s Time
It is important when getting yourself into a new situation like this not to have high expectations and also it is important to give yourself adequate time to get used to your new surroundings. Don’t worry if it takes you time to adjust getting used to the new people you have met. If you have an introvert personality it is important to not to shy away from everyone and keep yourself to yourself. Sometimes it’s a good idea just to sit back and watch the other people and assess their personalities to see who you think you would get along with. Once you think you know a bit about the people and their personalities then you can join in the conversations.
Be Approachable
Whether you are a volunteer in Malawi or a volunteer in South Africa you are going to be surrounded by people you don’t know so just be cheerful and people will approach you. It’s something a lot of people normal overlook but actually smiling gets you a long way in life. People will respond a lot better towards you if you have a smile on your face and a bubbly personality. Being happy is actually contagious and before you know it everyone around you will be happy and smiling as well. It really does make the whole volunteer experience a lot more enjoyable.
