Ideas or tips for non-meat eating camping?

Posted: April 1st, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Camping Tips | Tags: , , , , , , , , | 13 Comments »

This June I’m going to be camping at the Creation Music Festival with my brother and a friend. It’s a week long event, and as most people know who have been there, it can get hot, hot, HOT.

We’re always very phsyically active there, and the heat can get to you pretty easily. I’m a pescetarian, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips or ideas so that I wouldn’t end up collapsing from a lack of proper nutrien.

I’m mostly worried about getting enough protein, since I probably won’t be getting enough milk or eggs, or even fish, which I eat about once a week. Does anyone have any easy high-protein recipes? Or anything else that will keep me going?

Both my brother and our friend eat meat, so it would be just me that would need it.

Thanks so much!!

You eat fish so bring some canned tuna, peanut butter and jelly bread, and some dry milk, trail-mix, fruits and veggies. Bring your fishing pole along too. :o )

get some veggie burgers if youre worried. But I always make peanut butter granola. It lasts without refrigeration and its filled with protein. I always bring it camping. delish.

Bring trail mix (nuts have lots of protein and it’s easy to bring camping).

    Can you buy veggie dogs/burgers?

If you’re bringing a cooler, make up a big batch of pasta salad. I put tons of veggies, olives, chickpeas and kidney beans in mine. I make enough to fill a gallon bag and it keeps pretty well – maybe not a week, but at least the first half of it. I get plenty of protein and fresh vegetables that way.

Trail mix is a great option, too. Pick one with a variety of nuts, seeds and dried fruits.

Peanut butter sandwiches on whole grain will also be great for protein.

I really don’t think you have anything to worry about protein-wise. You’re not going to develop a deficiency in a week, especially if you’re normally a healthy eater. Like someone else said, if you’re active it’s mostly important to take in enough calories to meet your energy needs. And keep yourself well hydrated; that’s your number one defense against the heat.

Take bags of raw nuts, and munch on them all day. They don’t require any utensils or refrigeration, and unlike cooked nuts, they aren’t greasy and hard to digest- so they won’t make you feel tired and queasy in the heat.

Almonds will give you a good source of calcium as well. Raw cashews are delicious, as are pistachios and macadamias.
You can find bags of raw nuts in the produce section of large grocery stores and Whole Foods.

I like vegetarian camping better because you don’t need a big cooler/refrigeration. A lot of things that were mentioned, I ususally bring with me like homemade trail mix. You can also premake or make there things like rice & beans, cold rice salad w/brown rice & raw veggies in it like cucumber, peppers and onion. Also, don’t underestimate the deliciousness of crackers & cheese . . . Laughing Cow is good and doesn’t need to be kept cold. I also pack apples, oranges, bananas and whatever else looks good when I shop for a camping trip. Maybe also a box of rice milk or almond milk for cereal. It’s also really easy to make oatmeal while camping.

Try a raw foods vegan diet for a week. It’s great for camping out since you don’t need to worry about anything spoiling.

Get a life thumbs down trolls.

Brown rice has one of the highest protein contents of any non meat item. Mix it with everything.

Potatoes and green peas travel well.
Split legumes of ANY kind found in an indian food store travel well and only have to be soaked for an hour before cooking and won’t take all day to cook….also high in protein.

    Take a few onions.
    Fruits
    Pasta
    Hot Sauce
    Salt
    etc.

The most important thing is to get enough calories. You’re not going to get a protein deficiency camping for a few day, especially since you normally eat fish. Eat small frequent meals and you’ll be fine.
