Going camping for the first time, need tips…?
Posted: August 31st, 2010 | Author: Mitch | Filed under: Camping Tips | Tags: 50s, air mattress, Animals, bathrooms, Camping Tips, clothes, hotdogs, shoes, showers, sleeping bags, tent | 11 Comments »My boyfriend and I are going camping this weekend with some friends for 2 nights. Neither of us have ever been camping before so I was hoping we could get some camping tips!
We know to pack light, that it’s all about keeping it simple.
We know that there will be access to bathrooms, showers, and grills.
We know the temperature will probably be in the 70s during the day and the 50s at night.
We know to bring our tent, air mattress, and sleeping bags.
…That’s about all we know haha.
What is best to wear (clothes, shoes, etc.)? We will be doing some light hiking along a stream and our feet will probably get wet.
What kind of food should we bring? How do we store it? (If we bring hotdogs and burger in a cooler with ice, will the ice last 2 whole days?) How do we prepare it?
Is there anything we really MUST bring?
Is there anything we really SHOULD NOT bring? (aka anything that will attract animals that will eat us…?)
THANKS A LOT!!
"TheCuriousCooker", you must be confused. This is the section where you answer questions, not ask them. But, I’ll humor you. We’re in college. Camping is not big where we’re from, but it’s something we’ve always wanted to do.
I love camping. We go a couple of times a year. So I know alot about it, so i’ll try my best to help you out.
1) I normally wear shorts during the day, make sure their comfortable though. During the night I normally wear sweat pants, also to sleep in. Because in a tent, it gets colder. When your going on that hike wear some water shoes, or even some old sneakers will do.
2) Normally we bring hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks…and sometimes the ice will melt in a cooler for 2 days. So before you get there…try and look for the nearest grocery store or some sort of store that sells bags of ice. And when you cook the food…bring an electic grill…you can get them at wal-mart, target, k-mart…or any stores like that.
3)You must bring flashlights, extra clothes, water for when your walking.
4)Just bring your food, clothes, sleep stuff…and that should be good. And when you go to bed at night…make sure you put the coolers in your car. Because bears and other animals can get into them. Good luck and have fun:)
answer mine?

One thing….Beer, a lot of beer.
Whatever you do, don’t bring food. Total amateur move. It is the only thing that will attract animals and bugs (well and some sun screens), and there is ALWAYS plenty to be found.
Have fun!
Thats not camping if u got access to showers n stuff. Pshh but just take everything ud use in a kitchen like trashbags plates condiments stuff like that n clothes depending on if u get cold easy or hot.
one handy thing to bring, good for rain or shine, a huge tarp and some rope to tie it up. a place to sit under if it rains, a place for shade if it gets too hot, always handy.
Get a long rope to hang the food bag on the tree,in the air. So animals don’t eat all your foods.
Bring layers of clothes so you can add more when it gets cold & remove when it gets hot. Good walking shoes is a must. Whatever food you bring keep it in sealed containers so you don’t attract bears. Bring lots of water bottles & snacks & a camera of course
Have fun!!!
I go camping all the time!!
No the ice will not last to 2 days, but that’s ok there should be a camp store or a gas station to buy ice at….
It would be good if you got water proof hiking boots for when you walk through the water….you should were shorts maybe like basket ball shorts cuz you don’t really want to wear jean shorts and T- shirt….
It’s good to make a list of what your going to eat, like you will have burgers for dinner the first night and like that, so you can make sure you have enough food, also bring snacks for hiking maybe a nut mix…
Make sure to bring a flashlight, extra batteries…
Don’t bring a lot of shit, just what you think you will need…
make sure you bring soap and shampoo….
Don’t forget a pillow…
I hope this helps and I hope you have a great time!!!
bring a big gun because any camping problem can be solved with a gun.
Well first of all it’s camping so don’t get all crazy, ha ha!!! You don’t need to bring a lot of things just the simple basic things you think you will need or important camping gear!
tHings you might need will include a pillow, flashlight, first aid kit, suncreen, map of area, sunglasses, sleepingbag [if you want it for your tent, extra batteries, maybe a bebe gun or a real gun, shampoo and soap, maybe a towel, maybe a cellphone [though you can't be sure it will work in remote areas, and maybe some waterproof matches if you don't know how to start the fire the other way! [toliet paper, lol! and if you are to young to bring matches then if some one is old enough then you could get them to bring it.]
Since it going to be in the 70s then just wear pants down to your knees ay day time and when your walking along/ hiking then wear the knee pants or shorts. [bring a couple pair of shorts and blue jeans, like all the way down to your ankle] You need to bring the blue jeans for the night or you could bring sweat pants, anything comfortable but since it’s going to be cold then wear pants that go about down to ankle unless you have a suitable blanket. For your tops bring at least one hoodie or jacket then bring maybe one or two tank-tops. Then you could bring sandals for the camp area and tennis shoes while hiking or going walking anywhere.
For food you could bring like the food packets, bread, fruit, dry fruit, water!
For breakfast:
Food packets, fruit, non-perishable food items, dry fruit, water, granola bars, [any kind] potarts, and any thing else you like but doesn’t have to be kept in cooler so you could get the real camping experience!
For the hike:
Cookies, Granola bars, nuts, Dried nuts, nut bars, Almonds, Graham crackers, trail mix/chex-mic, and popcorn can also be token!
For dinner:
Hot dogs, Salad, Rice, soups, sometimes baked potatoes!
Items that attract animals:
the water will attract bugs but the smoke from the fire will most likely make them go away and any foods you have out or any else food product must be packed away in a container or a sealed bag so no animals can pick up the smell it and come to your camping area.
Good luck and i hope this helps. Have a great time!
1) Shorts and t-shirts for the day, sweats and hoodies for night (pack grubby clothes because you WILL get dirty and smell like a campfire when you’re through!)
2) Bring an ice chest, and you should be okay with ice for two days…just eat the perishable food first lol
3) Bring trash bags and tie it up in a tree so rodents and scavengers don’t get to it (racoons, skunks etc).
4) If you’re going camping for the first time, you’ve GOT to cook your hotdogs over the campfire, either on a wire hanger, or a simple stick! They’re the absolute best
(Bring stuff to make s’mores too–marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate)
5)As for hiking around the water, just bring some strap on sandles like Chacos or water shoes. Old sneakers would be fine too, just make sure you have a dry pair to change into after the hike.
6) Flashlight, toilet paper, and a tarp is always good.
7) Food ideas: Hot dogs, s’mores, oranges, potato salad, chips and salsa, bagels and cream cheese for breakfast, watermelon, etc
Have a blast!
