They are edible, but protected. There is a season on them just like deer. You need a license, and a federal duck stamp to hunt them. If prepared right they are very good, some people say they are a little greasy.
Going camping without food is just plain silly. At the very least even if your on a tight budget, take some bologna and bread.

duck – dark meat on a chicken is what they taste like. yum. a little greasy, but if you are barbequeing it, should take out a lot of grease. good luck.

First you will need a hunting lincese, then you will need a duck stamp more than likely.
They are a little gamey to taste.
Most folks I know just skin them instead of trying to pluck them. Its very hard to pluck them.
If you have carrots, put them in with the duck you roast, then throw away the carrots.
That is supposed to help take out the gamey taste.
If I was lost without any food, whatever I could catch would be ok with me. And I don’t believe you would get into trouble trying to survive.

They taste something in between Spotted Owl and Bald Eagle.

Ideally you would want to harvest a duck that feeds in the forest rather than in the water. Mallards are bottom feeders. One would do in a pinch but I would try for a wood duck or other forest feeding type duck. Seriously.

Mallards are illegal to kill out of season, without a license. They are edible but as a previous answer said, people usually skin them as the skin is very oily and game. To keep the meat from drying out in cooking, some wrap them in bacon.

Oh, Mallards fly really really fast.

Mallard ducks are quite edible and are quite tasty. They, like all wild ducks, are all dark meat with a rich flavor as you would expect from a dark meat. The problem is that they are a migratory waterfowl and as such are protected. The only time it is legal to harvest a mallard duck is during the season and only if you have the mandatory license and federal and state migratory waterfowl stamps. Harvesting a mallard out of season and without the required license and stamps will get you in a heap of trouble with the game wardens. Also you must use only non-lead shot. Using lead shot for hunting waterfowl will also get you in trouble. I understand that you will be in a subsistence mode while on your trip and it might seem that it would be permissible to kill and eat anything for survival. Here’s the problem, you will be in a subsistence mode of your own choosing and not as a result of some accident. Therefore the leniency that would be shown to a person in an emergency condition who might kill and eat a migratory waterfowl out of season and who lacks the necessary license and stamps would not be accorded you. If you want to live off migratory waterfowl while on an excursion, make your excursion during the specified waterfowl season and be sure to have the necessary license, stamps and use a non-lead shot.

Pitching a tent in a park and killing one of the ducks just cause you don’t have the cash for mikkeyD’s is not legal.

Yes they are edible, pretty good if you cook em right.

There is a hunting season for ducks, so you would have to have a hunting license, state duck stamp and federal duck stamp and follow all the regulations regarding how you can hunt them.

Don’t go hunting without food, take something. You may be in big trouble if you can not find anything in the wild and there are no stores around. Bad idea unless you are a versed survivalist, and even they don’t do anything without a backup plan.

LOL wow, yes you can eat mallards… Why do people come on here and ask whats legal to hunt in their state, it’s real easy, go to any hunting store and get your hunting regulations booklet or go to your states wildlife dept website, division of natural resources or whoever makes and enforces your game laws and do a little research. If you’re going to hunt, take 10 mins to learn the laws instead of just asking random people on the internet, you’re going to have to buy a hunting license and probably a federal duck stamp… Just b/c you decide to go camping without food doesn’t mean you can just hunt and kill whatever, the game warden and park rangers could care less for your lack of preparation. Learn your game laws for your state, buy the appropriate hunting licenses and follow them. It’s pretty easy, you sound kind of ignorant towards hunting so you might wanna take a hunter safety course.. Oh and by the way, don’t shoot a duck while its on the water, I’m sure that’s illegal in just about every state.
