Where should i start a one year camping trip in California?
Posted: August 20th, 2010 | Author: Mitch | Filed under: Camping Gear | Tags: Camping Gear | 7 Comments »I am planning on taking a bus to California by Dec., taking only camping gear, and seeing what happens. I plan on finding some work before leaving, but i will leave work or no work. I would like to rough it for at least a year, where is a good location for me to start out? Provided I have little to no knowledge of the area and only what is strapped to my back.
if your going to start in the winter…start in the SOUTH.
Summer start in the North. But what ever you do Go TO YOEMITE and plan to stay at the very least a week NO MATTER what time of year it is. Great camping and hiking, rafting, bikes, etc.
NO! Yuba river on Donnar pass hwy 80 east! beautiful!
idk
Wow, sounds like quite an adventure! If you’re going in December, I would definitely plan on starting in Southern California where it’s warmer and the weather will treat you nicer. Otherwise you might just run away from the idea on your first night!
There is tons of camping in Southern California. Try looking into San Diego, Orange County and Malibu. Some gorgeous campgrounds and lovely weather.
Further north, make sure you check out Big Sur and Yosemite! Some of my favorites in the world! If you want more information, I have a blog where I’ve talked about booking in California campgrounds and I’ve also written about Big Sur specifically (because it’s one of my favorites!)
Good luck on your adventure and happy happy camping!
look at the pacific rim trail if you are going to start in December start in the south San Diego or LA and head toward the high country later in the year it is too cold for camping till late spring in the Sierras
Pacific Crest Trail, from south to north

You will need to do alot of planning.
There are a lot of beach camping and desert camping possibilities in California. Just make sure to research the areas and the type of camping you are going to have to get used to. Camping is different all over the country. The good thing is that there are very few real annoying bugs in California.
Just be ready for different terrains and atmospheres and bring sunscreen, lots of it!!!!
I agree with Edwina……must go to Yosemite at some point….it is well worth it even though it gets crowded.
