Is it possible to tramp from the top of Northland to the bottom of Southland?

Of course it is. you should allow about 3 months to achieve as New Zealand is a bit bigger than most people think. Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand
Yes of course. Walking will always get you from "A" to "B" .but there will be many times that any tramper will need to use public roads and some bed and breakfast accommodation. Of course crossing Cook Straight will require a ferry trip of about 3 hours, a bit wet if you walk. L O L..There are also many purpose built walks but these are usually three and four day round trips in scenic areas.
Yeah, pretty much. You will have to take the ferry between islands and use a bit of the State Highway network as well though.
Go to the Te Araroa (Long Pathway) website for details on the Cape Reinga to Bluff walk. Although vast sections of it have been created, some places still have missing tracks.
Go to;
Department of Conservation for National Park and hut info: http://doc.govt.nz
Te Araroa Trust for details on the Long Pathway: http://www.teararoa.org.nz/
Have fun attempting this!
