Where can we hike and camp for free in southern california?

My husband and I are trying to start hiking and camping on the weekends to spend more time together and I would like to know of good hiking areas that we can go and hike and make a campground and have fun in the wilderness.

    Torrey Pines Natural Reserve is very nice and it is free BUT parking is $8 BUT if you are lucky, you can get street parking, then it would be really free

    If you go to Anza Borrego, you can hike and camp for free in "primitive" camp sites. As well, you are allowed to just stop the car and camp anywhere so as long as you are not blocking the road or destroying the environment etc and this is free too
