Don’t know what you consider "southern" New England. There are several good spots along the Appalachian Trail in Massachusetts, the most well-known being Goose Pond. There’s also Gore Pond, which is a bit marshy, and a couple of smaller ones. You can check ‘em out on an AT map at the ATC website. There are a couple of spots along the Long Trail in southern Vermont, and the Adirondacks and Catskills in New York are filled with lakes. I assume you’re not car camping, as most of these places will require a bit of a hike.
