Where can I go camping in New York or other nearby states?

This is what I am looking for. Somewhere in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey or anywhere else not to far from NYC. I want to go tent camping and I am looking for something secluded, meaning I don’t want to be at a campground with other people and RVs, I want just a random place in the woods where it will be just me and my friends. And it would be nice if they have a river or lake nearby.
In PA you can camp in the state forest land with no one camping near you. You will need a permit (free) and they will either mail it or fax it to you. Check out the website http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/camping
This site has maps and shows you trails and things to do while camping. It will also tell you how to obtain a camping permit.
Have fun!!
Harriman State park is the closest thing ot the city that has what you are looking for. Its right over the GW Bridge down the palisades, you can also take the Tappan zee or Bear Mtn bridge if you want. I`m not talking about Bear Mtn state park, you might as well go to Central park.
There are leanto`s (think 3 sided shack) and tent sites available, both are primitive as there is no facilities- electricity and restrooms. Some areas do have springs for water but mostly you`ll need a water filter or some other type of treatment.

.
There are dozens of places in the Adirondacks. Its only about 2-3 hours north of the city
Good luck with that; in the Northeast it’s quite rare to be able to just wander off into the woods on a camping excursion. There’s very little "public land" and what there is of it is closely managed.
That being said, the New York state office of tourism has brochures that describe the available camping venues in New York. You’ll find them categorized by region. There’s the Adirondacks State Park – I’m sure you’ve heard of it. There’s lots of camping in the Finger Lakes region – some of the most beautiful scenery in the Northeast is there. Then there’s the Mohawk Valley. There’s Western New York. There’s the Champlain Valley.
If you insist upon camping away from other campers, you’ll have to meet a landowner who is willing to let you slip into his woods and do your thing without all the conveniences such as flush toilets and showers…and as an experienced camper, I can tell ya you’ll miss those things a LOT. And few landowners will be willing to let a bunch of kids they don’t know very, very well onto their land – ’cause if anything bad happened to any of ya, the landowner can be held liable. You screw around and bust your leg while on my property, I could be out thousands and thousands of dollars. Sorry, kid, but you ain’t worth it. Go to a state campground or stay home!
Doc Bill is way off—new york state is one of the few places that you CAN wander off and make a campsite as long as you follow some basic rules–there are tons of places in the adirondacks like that but i’m not gonna give up my favorite spots ‘casue than they get overrun and trashed by people who dont care about it
