I am a frequent camper in NY. I have camped all over the state and have some good recommendations.

The best camp grounds are in the Adirondacks by far. In the Adirondacks, I prefer the ones in the central Adirondacks (near Old Forge). Lots of great hiking, great restaurants and but lots of privacy. My favorites are (Eighth Lake, Limekiln Lake, Browns Track Pond or Golden Beach),

In the Eastern Adirondacks (North of Albany and Saratoga), my favorite is Putnam Pond. I am not a big fan of the ones near Lake George because of the crowds. I like Lake George but sites like Hearthstone are very tight (close together) with little privacy.

For the record, I have not camped the high peaks (near mt marcy) but have heard the sites are nice there too.

Skip the southern Catskills unless you are ok with crowds. The Catskills are too close to NYC

If you are going for a week, do yourself a favor and do a little research on Old Forge. Worth the visit

Monguap Pond in the Catskills is EXCELLENT. They have clean solar powered showers that are modern with electricity (the showers actually are not like the dirty huts you normally see on a campgrounds). On top of it, many of the sites (book in advance) are bordering the lake so you can rent your own canoe and paddle up to your campsite! It is also a fish hatchery so there is good fishing there if anyone wants to fish. Another good site is Wilson Park near Woodstock. It is pretty and also clean. If you want to go outside of NY, go to Belleplain park in New Jersey. There is electricity and showers and all that and a beautiful lake that the sites are situated next to too. (but NJ has those awful wolf spiders which are ugly as hell so your better off in New York. LOL (have a great time….I love camping)
