Three or four day hiking excursions in eastern US?

My husband and I are experienced day hikers, but now we’re looking to get away for a few days and simply backpack, no campgrounds, no modern effects. We live in Ohio and have about a week of vacation to burn. We have time to drive as far as South Carolina, New England, etc. We are looking to do this at the beginning of May. I’ve looked at Linville Gorge in North Carolina, Mt. Marshall also in North Carolina, and a couple places in Virginia. Thanks a lot for any advice!!!

The beginning of May would be a great time to visit the Linville Gorge area. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Appalachian Trail but it runs right through that area and there is great hiking along it.

A place adjacent to Linville Gorge and, more remote, is Wilson Creek. There are tremendous hiking opportunities there and the scenery is wonderful. The water that flows through Wilson creek comes down from the Linville Gorge area actually.

Here are a few links for you to learn more about the Wilson Creek area.

These links should give you loads of info about hiking opportunities along the Wilson Creek area. I have hiked many of the trials along Wilson Creek and most take you either to or past waterfalls of some sort. The hiking isn’t too tough but there are some steep areas that you need to be in good shape for.

Hiking around the Linville Falls area is wonderful too and give you chance here and there to take in wonderful views from high up. It feels like being in a airplane in some places because of the high elevation. Nearby is Grandfather Mtn and there are wonderful trails there too.

Table Rock is another place very near Linville that has awesome hiking and wonderful views. Here are some links to photos and info about Table Rock.

I live near the Wilson Creek area and If you find it interesting and I can get you more info I’d be happy to help.
