Stargazing in New York?

Posted: October 13th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Camp Sites | Tags: , , , | 3 Comments »

I live in NYC, and I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a good campground near the city (maybe upstate or in Pennsylvania) with clear views of the night sky? I want to go camping somewhere I can see the meteor shower in August, preferably somewhere within a three-hour drive of the city. If you don’t know the name of a campground that’s ok, even a general area would be helpful. Thanks!

The Internation Dark-Sky Association (IDA) has a tool that helps to find dark-sky sites. You can try it out here: http://www.darksky.org/darksky/

Anywhere that is seven miles from away from a small town is good. Light pollution is what you want to avoid.
Seven miles is a close line of sight for the curvature of the Earths surface, so seven miles from any city, most towns and whatever light pollution there is will help.

Try searching the net for Campgrounds near Middleburgh NY Max V Shauls state park is good. Twin oaks camp grounds. Middleburgh is in upstate NY about 2.5 to 3 hrs away. Grat place to watch the stars or meteor shower. IF you want to stay at a camp ground and hike a mountain to watch try Vromans nose closer to the stars the better. That is located right in Middleburgh
