He is 9 yearws old. He loves and is used to ther outdoors. Would he be ok in a vacation area in Maine where it is secluded and there is no chance of him getting hit by a car? In NY, he ALWAYS COMES when I call him. (In Maine, there is a campground where we have vacationed and known eachother for 20 years!)

I kept my cat indoors for the first five years of her life. It just seemed cruel. First time I let her out, she ran away. I plastered the neighborhood with posters offering a reward, and some kids found her five blocks away. I eased her into it with a leash thereafter. Eventually we had pretty good luck letting her out while traveling, but occasionally lost an entire day when she decided not to show up til sundown. I lost her one time in a condo area…she wandered into a garage and was trapped. That one took two weeks to find her, and some serious reward money, as the son in the family that found her was starting to get attached to her. She was a beauty, and a sweetie. Also, remember, there are wolves, foxes and such in the woods that may want to make a meal out of your pet. And fleas and other insects that can make him/her sick.

I wouldn’t let him out. As the first poster said, he’s likely to be disoriented and get lost. Keep him indoors and if you decide to take him outdoors, make sure he is wearing identification and secured on a harness and leash.

NO! it is a strange area and he would likely wander off.

I have taken my cat away with me before but she is always kepy indoors, she was frightened at first but got used to it. I wouldn’t recommend letting him out in strange area. You can leave your cat in a cattery for the week where he will be looked after.

Have you tried contacting a professional pet sitter? I am sure there would be one available. Taking your cat to a strange area and letting it lose is not a good idea. You will likely lose him. Also, getting hit by a car is only one of MANY outdoor dangers. Best to play it safe and get a sitter to watch him at home.
