going to california and not renting a hotel?

What are some ideas for going to california and not renting a hotel?
Me and two friends are going on vacation to california this summer, but we don’t want to rent a hotel because we are cheap.
I was thinking something like buying a tent and finding some campgrounds, but i dont know.
We’re taking a ford focus so we don’t have enough room to sleep in the car really.
What are some ideas for places to sleep and shower in california without renting a hotel?

You could go for hostels if you don’t mind sharing the room with tons of other people. The more people you are willing to share the room with, the lower the price. Most have kitchens that you could use so you could save on some eating out cost. Way easier than getting a tent and finding places to shower for the savings. How long are you staying?

Fitness clubs aren’t exactly cheap especially if you’re adding to the cost you’re paying for other things.

Come on now…………. three of you and you don’t want to stay in comfort?????? How much can it cost dividing it three ways? Your better off staying home and do it when you have a few bucks. Vacations are for fun….not uncomfort!!!!

Buying a tent is around $100,and a hotel is worth for the bathrooms and heat. The price of spending a few nights at the campground will cost less but a hotel is worth it

There are campgrounds all along the coast. You can check out state campgrounds at http://www.reserveamerica.com. Don’t try to camp on any other beaches. You will quickly find that the locals are very protective of their beaches, and the local authorities are likewise unfriendly towards people trying to camp at the beach.

Other possibilities include a hostel. http://usahostel.com.

Theres plenty of places to tent camp, that have showers, they charge daily and have rules of how long you can stay, as in one night or a week or whatever. google tent camping in california, and look on the state website also. They have those small single person tents that fold up into barely anything that would fit the car fine. Make sure you read each parks rules, we had a wind come up and our tent collapsed on one side, my ex tied in the dark the tent to a tree which was a nono and in the morning a park person came and ticketed us for a small branch that fell off, it was a hassell having to go back to that place to fight it, and we lost. So know the rules. Have fun!!
