We stayed at a campground in San Clemente once. I don’t think it was very expensive either. I’m sure you could find some good prices if you looked around.

    Nowhere.

There are NO free campgrounds in California. The State parks department and the counties that run these campgrounds are strapped for cash, and have even increased fees.

I wouldn’t just try to pitch a tent anywhere. You will most likely be asked to leave very rudely in the middle of the night by local law enforcement. Depending on their attitude, you might get a free stay at the Graybar Hotel, if you know what I mean.

Sorry, no free stays in California.
