Fishing Upstate New York?

Posted: November 30th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Camp Sites | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , | 7 Comments »

Im from Pennsylvania and looking to go on a fishing and camping trip this summer with my wife and two sons(7&3). I figure NY is my best bet since the fishing in PA is not very good. Canada would probably be best but I dont want to travel that far. The fishing around Lake Ontario is fantastic but the Idea of taking my two small boys two such a big lake scares me, plus there is not alot of panfish spots to take the kids. I looked into the finger lakes but I know very little about the area. Seems like all they have is wineries and campgrounds not on the lakes. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

    Several years ago a friend and I went on this type of trip. Not a lot of panfish at the time that we went (mid april) but could be a little later at Lake Placid. We were in that area, from Lake Placid to Lake Champlain along the AuSable and Salmon rivers. The trout fishing is fantastic with lots of access to the river banks. The camping is wide open and strictly wilderness with no real campsites except along established hiking trails. There are a good number of motels in the area if the wilderness situation is too much to handle. It’s beautiful country, you’ll love it out there.

    Sounds to me as if you’re going to lake fish w/ 2 young sons and a wife. You really aren’t going to do any better in NY than PA for panfish from shore on a lake……

    NY does offer more opportunities for coldwater species, though

    I believe I can help you out buddy…well I’ve fished New York state just recently and I can tell you a good trip would be Old Forge New York. The Fishing there is absolutely awesome…from sunnies, crappie, and bass to pike, muskie, trout, and walleye. Definitely a great place to visit with very welcoming locals.

    If you are looking for tips on fishing here live bait like worms and shiners work the best and are a guaranteed fish catcher and as for lures try 4-6 inch Perch or Fire Tiger colored Rapalas (Deep Diving) This place isn’t heavily fished but remember they are deep since the lakes are deep as well.

    go to nys dec web site. they will tell all. as for the great lakes, put your kids in a lifevest, attach a 6 to 7 foot piece of rope to each, then to you. unless you go in the water, you have control where they go. did this to my kids, got funny looks and nasty comments, but they WERE safe. note: you can substitue chain for the rope

    Try Ausable Chasm. Camped there years ago with young children. Beautiful area;
    good fishing.
