Does anyone know where to go tent camping in sw Florida?

Most of the places that I have looked around at here are heavily geared towards RVs. I know I can tent camp at these places but I would rather go somewhere a little more like a campground than a resort.
In your part of the state your best choices probably are state or Corps campgrounds. Here are two links to state campgrounds and one for the Corps.

If you don’t mind driving a distance the Ocala National Forest allows dispersed camping outside of campgrounds. It also has a lot of small primitive campgrounds. Here’s the link.

You probably don’t need reservations this time of the year but during tourist season it’s almost a must.
Welcome to Florida
I believe you can go online with rvamerica or floridaparks and ask or see the question…make sure you ask about rural camping with a tent….
There are several state parks near you that are geared to all types of camping. I’ve gone in my motorhome and felt out of place with all the tent campers. Try one of these:
1. Koreshan State Park (941) 922-0311
2. Oscar Scherer State Recreation Area (941) 483-5956
The first is near Ft. Myers and the second is just North of Venice. Florida State Park reservations can be made at:

There is a state park with camping South of you, but I would hold off until it cools off. It’s Collier-Seminole State Park (941) 394-3397.
Good luck & happy camping
My favorite camping area is Hillsborough River State Park but have also stayed at Oscar Scherer State Park. They have RVs within the same area as tent campsites, but not all the campers are RVers. Stayed in the campgrounds up in north Florida – Cavern State Park – the caverns were really cool (beautiful and cold – oh yeah!). Go on-line and check out all the state parks – you can always call and ask the percentages of tents vs RVs. I haven’t really been to any bad campgrounds – except the primitive ones – I don’t camp without running water and potties. Hope you enjoy Florida, I won’t be camping again until September – it’s just too hot for me.
