Spring Arbor Michigan -camping in below zero weather

Posted: May 31st, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Camp Sites | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

In this video I took my now grown kids to an area of Michigan where my friends and I in high school camped out for a couple of days in a teepee. This was in the middle of winter, and it was well below zero that night. The fire melted the frozen ground, and we were in a sea of mud. Then some animal got in the wind tunnel for the fire, which almost killed it. We all brought food with us, but I took a TV dinner (how do you thaw a TV dinner when you are outside and it is below zero? Well, you throw it in the fire. Still didn’t taste right!

Camping Rocky Mountain National Park. Jun-July 08?

I’m planning our camping trip for next summer and need some ideas for a 7 year old while we camp at Rocky Mountain National Park. Does anyone know if they do a fireworks show? Easy trails that she could keep up on? Any recomendations on camp grounds within the park? We camp a lot in eastern nebraska all summer, but mountains will be different. Will it get really cold at night? I’ve been there once, but it was soo long ago I don’t remember the details. Also any recent prices would be helpful. Thanks in advance! Any ideas welcome!

Lets Go Fishing In Bright – Pristine Surroundings, And A Good Catch

Posted: May 30th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Outdoor Activity | Tags: , | No Comments »

Who couldn’t be tempted with a peaceful afternoon on the bank of your favorite river with your rod by your side, and a few beers. Fishing is a huge part of the Australian lifestyle, in particular, fishing in Bright is a popular activity. Why Bright? The serenity, the rivers, and the endless places still left to discover where that big catch awaits.

One of the greatest spots for fishing in Bright would have to be the Kiewa River. Although on the other side of Tawonga Gap, this is a popular spot for fisherman all year round. It can even sometimes be hard to find a good spot that is not taken between Mt Beauty and Tawonga, however that doesn’t mean that the catch is not good. Lure fishing is very popular here, and works great with the faster flowing currents, with the average catch being around 2lb. Brown and Rainbow Trout populate this river, as it flows from the high country into the Kiewa Valley, accordingly, it is a popular place if you can find a spot.

The Ovens River is a little more varied however, ranging from being wide and gentle, to narrow and fast running closer to the mountains. In the areas further away from the mountains, Fly Fishing is very popular near the willows that line the river. As the flies generally surround the willows, creating a feeding ground for the larger Trout, landing a fly the right way here can come with huge reward, and an exciting catch.

Closer towards the mountains where the Ovens River tends to become more rapid, is much more suited to those who want to cast a few lures against the current, or even to drop some bait. My favorite method involves casting a small hook with a berley container full of maggots. This method proves to be too tempting for those 2 – 3 pound trout, and a good days catch is always a good reward.

Lake Buffalo is rather secluded, situated behind the Mt Buffalo Massif, and provides a bounty of opportunity for Fly Fisherman, and those who want to bait cast and enjoy a quiet day in a beautiful and remote location. Popular in most seasons for Fly Fisherman, this is one of those places that your grandfather told you about (we all have one of these stories right?). As this area is not as frequented as the nearby Kiewa and Ovens Rivers, this is one of those spots that really allows you to take in the peace and tranquility.

Of course, I can not speak about fishing in Bright without talking about getting a fishing license. In Victoria, it is a legal requirement that all people who fish in Victorian rivers and seas, need a fishing license. The good news is that a license is cheap to obtain, for one days fishing, it will cost you less than a few loaves of bread.

You may be asking, what exactly is the attraction that those feel who love to go fishing in Bright? My idea of a great weekend away in Bright after a god catch involves a few good mates, an esky with a few brews, and more than anything, that kind of recharge that you get knowing that you are getting away from it all, in one of the most pristine places in Victoria. Yet, another outstanding reason to come and see Bright Victoria.
